Oral micronized progesterone used in MHT to protect the uterine lining when estrogen is prescribed.
Treats: Protects the endometrium when taking estrogen (required for women with a uterus), perimenopausal sleep support, irregular or heavy periods in perimenopause.
How to take it: One capsule by mouth at bedtime. Taking at night helps with the mild drowsiness it causes, and many women find it supports sleep.
Important:
- Contains peanut oil — if you have a severe peanut allergy, tell your clinician before taking this medication. An alternative progestin can be prescribed.
- Not for use during pregnancy.
Common side effects: Mild drowsiness (usually beneficial at night), breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes — typically improve within a few months.
Micronized progesterone has a lower breast cancer risk profile compared to older synthetic progestins.
