Carrying a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation doesn't automatically disqualify you from hormone therapy.
- If you haven't had breast cancer and haven't had preventive surgery: The risk-benefit calculation is complex and highly individual — this requires detailed discussion with your clinician and ideally a genetic counselor or breast oncologist.
- If you've had a risk-reducing oophorectomy (ovary removal): Hormone therapy may actually be recommended to manage the sudden, severe menopause that follows surgery. Evidence suggests it does not increase cancer risk in this context.
- If you've had breast cancer: Hormone therapy is generally not recommended — your oncologist is the right person to advise you.
