What should I do if I think I am experiencing precipitated withdrawal?

Important: Do not stop taking Suboxone.

The most important thing to know is that the correct response to precipitated withdrawal is to take more buprenorphine, not to stop it. This is counterintuitive but is the pharmacologically correct approach. More buprenorphine helps your receptors stabilize and resolves the withdrawal episode.

Here is what to do:

  • Contact our Patient Support  team immediately. Let them know what is happening so they can guide you through next steps.
  • Take additional buprenorphine as directed. Your clinician may advise you to take additional 2 mg doses sublingually every 1 to 2 hours until your symptoms improve. Do not adjust your dose without guidance from your clinician.
  • Stay home if your symptoms are mild to moderate. Most cases can be managed at home with additional buprenorphine and supportive care.
  • Go to the emergency room if symptoms are severe or not improving. If your symptoms are not responding after several hours, or you are unable to function, seek emergency care.
